We beached our skiff on an open bank and walked across a sandy berm that led us to the unprotected east side of the Chandeleurs. Our friend ship, with Woodward and Pancratz, parked inside a different creek and met us along the shore break. The water that typically lets wade-fishing for specks was overcome with white water and roiled with sand. A 4-foot shark poked its fins above the waves, scouting the intertidal zone in waters that lapped our kneecaps. Captain Dennis Marshall was born and raised on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He’s a 3rd generation fisherman. Dennis was presented to the water at a young age. His father was an accomplished shrimp ship captain. Dennis' youth was spent in the family shrimping business. Shortly after graduation from Long Beach high school, Dennis pursued a career as a Fireman. During the most of Dennis' life, he’s had support from his wife of over 30 years. Fishing and camping along the Chandeleur and Free Mason Islands off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. These islands are really situated in Louisiana waters but we left out of our home town of Biloxi, Mississippi. We have had better trips when it comes to catching Speckled trout and Red Fish but it was great time despite. We fished along the West side of Chandeleur Islands and arrived at Free Mason Island that afternoon where we set up camp, grilled hamburgers, cooked beans on an alcohol stove and watched the sunset. Chris was all up for the drive as we rondevu at his house at 9pm. We had to be there the next morning to load up and, yes we were driving straight through and yes, I am too old to do that. As we filled I wonder how we could kill the time on the drive up. Four guys with all the gear and a 10 hour drive. It do not sound like much fun but some how we got through it. Talks of fishing, more fishing, the meaning life, and religion debate passed the time. Nine and half hours afterward we were driving into Biloxi, MS to meet up with the mother ship ship.
