On the lake, fish continue to be seen during the day but need some coaxing to bite. Downsize your spoons; rattle baits seem to be drawing fish in over 19 to 35 feet. Saugers and tullibees are making up the most of the catch with some walleyes, perch, and northern pike blended in. Ice conditions on the Rainy River differ so work through a resort if you plan on fishing it. At the Northwest Angle, the 22- to 24-foot mud and sand is producing walleyes. There’s an area off Little Oak Island that transitions from rock to hard bottom that’s also been productive. Crappie action continues to be good if you stay on the move. (outdoornews.com)
I fished out of Hunter’s Point last Saturday for the Perch Extravaganza and targeted tullibee. I fished some of the deeper regions as close the edge of the flat as I could get. 33-35FOW is where we caught fish. Between 3 guys and a matter of 3hrs fishing we managed 17 tullibees over 16 ad quite some under that we released. Small jigging spoons like forage minnows key was no rattles and also 5mm tungsten jigs both tipped with either minnow heads or larva. It was mayhem when the fish could come through. We had many triples in the time spent fishing. Also managed to catch 3 jumbos right around 11 -12 and some 14 -16 walleyes. (fishingminnesota.com)
Good walleye the mud flats for deeper rocks about 20-30 feet, using leeches or crawlers on Lindy Rigs or spinners. Anglers may also attempt shallow rock and gravel regions about 6-10 feet, using leeches with slip bobbers throughout the evenings. Northerns are hitting on sucker minnows at 10-12 feet in bays along the weeds. Smallmouth bass are along shorelines in the weeds or rocks, using leeches or plastic grubs. (startribune.com)
Lura Lake covers about 1, 300 acres, averages 5 feet deep and reaches a maximum depth of only 9 feet. A public ship ramp is in Blue Earth County-Daly Park, along the eastern shoreline. From Mapleton, take County Highway 7 to the south, then follow the signs leading to the park. Camping, picnic shelters, and a fishing pier are all available at this place. A second ship ramp is in the lake’s northwestern corner. All boaters should be aware that Eurasian water milfoil was documented in Lura Lake. (gameandfishmag.com)
Jigs tipped with leeches or minnows are producing walleyes in six to 12 feet at Seagull Lake, 12 to 15 feet at Homer Lake, eight to 12 feet at Two Island Lake, and in eight to 10 feet at Poplar Lake. Spoons or minnows continue to trigger lake trout over 30 feet at Lake Saganaga, over 25 feet at Mayhew Lake, and over 25 or 45 feet at Clearwater Lake. Crawlers are the ticket for rainbow trout at Moss Lake in 25 to 28 feet, Leo Lake in 20 to 22 feet, and in 15 feet at Esther Lake. Northern pike are hitting sucker minnows in 10 feet at Northern Lights Lake and Poplar. Smallmouth bass are hitting on most lakes with Hungry Jack, Gunflint, and Seagull leading the way. 521 acres : Located in Freeborn County in the Town of Albert Lea, Fountain Lake is worth looking into on the opener. 2011 test netting showed an abundant northern pike population with 14 pike being captured per gill net. Northern pike weren’t big but did average a little over 2 pounds and ranged from 19 to 26 inches. A healthy walleye population is present in Fountain Lake as they were sampled at a rate of 6/gill net in the 2011 survey. Walleyes were nice-sized as the average length was nearly 21 inches, and all of the walleyes were greater than 15 inches. The chance to hook into a trophy walleye is present, with the biggest sampled walleye measuring just over 27 inches. (fishingnowmn.weebly.com)
NORTHEAST METRO Sunfish continue to hit on Lake Peltier and Little Lake in eight to 10 feet. The public fishing dock at fight Creek Lake is kicking out sunfish also. Northern pike and bass are an easy catch on White Bear Lake, Big Marine Lake, Demonterville Lake, Olson Lake and Big Carnelian Lake. Look to the pumphouse on Centerville Lake for crappies. Some muskies are being taken throughout the evening hours at Forest Lake, Lake Owassa and Bald Eagle Lake. The St. Croix River remains the area’s best bet for walleyes and sauger. Efforts to populate the lake with walleye fry stocking flopped, however stocking with fingerlings in 2001 succeeded. Surveys finished that the numbers of walleye in the lake are on the higher class of the normal range for a lake of this type. Less than three of the fish caught by gill nets were from fish that weren’t stocked throughout the years of fingerling. The logical conclusion is that maintaining strong walleye populations rely upon repeated stocking of fingerlings. Walleye fishing is most likely best off of the rocky humps on the northern center of the lake. (Read more)
I know about Calhoun/Lake of the Isles/Cedar and Minnetonka, however I'm pretty certain there’s lots of fishing pressure on those lakes and I'd like to find something with a little less development on the shoreline, at least a less-trafficked lake to go fishing on. I don't mind driving up to an hour for an afternoon/evening's trip; any more can be a bit inconvenient. Can anybody recommend some good lakes with decent fish populations? I'll be in a kayak, so I don't need a full-fledged ship launch as much as a place to park my Explorer. I appreciate any help. I haven't fished since I moved here and I can't take it anymore.
