I wanted to see what this place was about. I did one day offshore fishing, one day backcountry fishing, and one day on the Party ship. I had lots of fun each trip and they were all different. I caught a bunch of tuna and mahi offshore. In the backcountry we went towards the everglads and caught trout, jacks, snapper, ladyfish, sharks, and a tarpon. The Miss Islamorada was the least costly but was still a nice trip. I caught some snapper for dinner, then some small stuff I released. If you go to the KEYS attempt to get out on one of the private charters at Bud N Mary’s. (tripadvisor.com)

Lots of people believe that the waters off Islamorada serve as a nursery area for small fish, a hypothesis supported by the remarkable numbers of sub-100-pound fish being caught and released here. Anglers fishing farther north, between Miami and Fort Pierce, seem to be seeing bigger fish on average, however Islamorada looks to be producing the biggest numbers. Wherever you decide to attempt it, the swordfish fishery is again a high- game, and with a little care on our part, it’s bound to become one of the finest and most challenging fisheries in South Florida. Upon returning to Whale Harbor Marina, the swordfish was weighed on an IGFA certified scale. The reason this catch was ruled as ‘unofficial’ is that all six anglers worked to bring in the swordfish. To be an official record, only one angler is allowed to reel in the catch. But, this swordfish is the biggest swordfish to be caught by a charter in Islamorada. The old record was a 450 lb. Swordfish caught by a competing marina on the island. (floridakeysfishing-charters.com)
There are a couple of ways to find a charter captain or fishing guide. Go for a walk through a marina, many of which may be seen from the highway, and talk to people. Captains are more than happy to answer questions. Boats typically come back in around 4pm, so you may be able to catch a glimpse of what you can be able to catch for yourself. Many captains and guides have sites on the Web, so do some surfing to find them. (floridakeys.com)
