Caney Creek Reservoir Fishing Report

At 1st glance, the stats on Caney may make it seem to be a lightweight. The lake is only 5, 000 acres and is in a pretty secluded part of Jackson Parish. But don t be fooled, it s a heavyweight, just like its largemouths. In the spring and fall, Caney Lake is a lunker bass factory. The 15. 97 pound lunker caught by Greg Wiggins in Caney in February 1994 still stands as the lake record. To add more cover to Caney Lake, the state produced some number of fake reefs made of plastic pallets scattered during the lake. The biologists really established these structures, which somewhat resemble Christmas trees, to attract crappies. Minnows and shad gather in the ‘branches’ of these trees. Crappies move in to feed on the minnows and other baitfish. Bass gather to feed on the minnows and bream that lurk near these reefs, however they also pick off some crappies if they can catch them. Caney Lake Reservoir started to get it is repute as a producer of trophy size bass in 1991 when a 13 pounder was caught and stated. But, in actuality, the lake was filled with 8 inch size fish. Largemouth bass fishing is best in the lower end of the reservoir where the water is clear. The lake record weighed 14. 65 pounds. Is recognized for its bass fishing and birdwatching. Lakefront Park is at the north end of the lake and borders Lakeshore Blvd. Lakefront Park has a scenic walking path with benches where visitors may view the area’s large array of waterfowl, alligators, turtles and others. Then there's some hydrilla in Lake Fork. This is an exotic aquatic plant that was present in the lake for many years but it has experienced fluctuations in abundance, all of which is unrelated to any grass treatment actions. The TPWD hasn't been doing any herbicide or another grass control treatment – because it isn't needed at the time. The hydrilla here has naturally fluctuated as water levels have fluctuated. It's starting to come back a bit more this spring and Bonds feels that some of the pro anglers may target some of the regions with good hydrilla. Bonds knows that up at the top of the lake around the Birch Creek area and up on the west side of the lake also as the east side the Caney Creek side, up in Glade and some of the other creek arms have good hydrilla now. Those serious about fly fishing will want to attempt smaller, lesser-recognized spots like Panthertown Creek three miles of stream to fish, which is called the ‘Yosemite of the East’ due to craggy rock formations around it. There is a two-mile hike to the creek, however it is worth it. Other spots experts will want to fish include the Chattooga River roughly six miles of waters to fish, Whitewater River two to three miles of fishing and Tanasee Creek two to three miles of fishing .
