“One year, someone brought out a banjo minnow, which was something they saw on a commercial and bought as a joke. They brought it out here and won, ” said Roberta. “There was one woman who decided to come out at the last minute and bought all of her gear on the way out to the lake. She had never fished before and she won. It just shows you don’t have to be an expert to partake. Another person came out here and won $10, 000 and they used the money to open a restaurant, which was their dream. They used it as the seed money. Stories like that are generally good to hear. ”. His northern pike was one of the record 1, 240 fish turned in over the three-hour fishing competition. Over 400 volunteers were on hand to be sure the fish, which ranged from rock bass to perch, walleyes, and pike, were released effectively. Catches were carefully transported inside water-filled bags from the hole to weigh-in and subsequently released under the supervision of a team from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Totally volunteer run, The Brainerd Jaycees $150, 000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza donates all proceeds to deserving units. More than 50 organizations in the Brainerd Lakes area have received donations in the history of the event, which has raised nearly $3 million in charitable donations. Extravaganza hosted by the Brainerd Jaycees. The winning fish was a 5. 98 pound walleye caught by Zachary Bailey of Nisswa, MN. Once I pulled it out of the water, I really thought this may be the one that could win the whole thing, said Bailey. It turns out he was right. The walleye is the fish species that has won 1st place the most times in the history of the contest. This one was caught in 45 feet of water and Bailey took home a 2009 Ford 4×4 Pick-up. In 100th place, winning a Suzuki KingQaud 750 ATV, was 11-year-old Steven Sumstad from Coon Rapids, MN. He caught a 0. 64 pound walleye in his 1st look at the yearly event. (in-depthoutdoors.com)

1st held in 1991, this event was postponed only one other time in 2002 and moved to a different lake once in 2006. Hailed as the world s biggest charitable ice fishing tournament, event organizers have donated almost $3-million to Brainerd-area charities, most notably Confidence Learning Center, in its 21-year history. The 21st yearly Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza was held this past weekend, in of all places, Brainerd, Minnesota! Recycled Fish was on hand again this year to lend a hand to the tournament organizers, setting up Recycled Fish bag stands and distributing the more than 5000 plastic bags used at this event. We had a great volunteer crew for Recycled Fish out there this year, headed up by tournament director Ben Leal.
