I’m surprised. There’s just one thing left out when it comes to Lake St. Clair and that’s the jumbo perch. I fish there every year all year long and I have to say that the most targeted fish through the ice hands down must be the jumbo perch. I strongly recommend that In-Fisherman Staff make a special trip to Lake St. Clair for this great opportunity. Just call Lake Side Fishing Report at 1-586-777-7008 and listen to the pre-recorded fishing report. I recommend going out in front of Gino’s when the ice is thick enough. All I recommend is that you rest your casting arm because once you drop your line in the water you’ll have all you may be able to do just to keep up. (in-fisherman.com)

My father great times travelling all over Ontario trying to find that perfect lodge for spending our yearly fishing trips together. Then we ran into nice Cove Resort on Georgian Bay. 10 years afterward my yearly fishing trip was passed down to include my son and daughter. The fishing and adjustments here have spoiled them to the point where they will not think about trying other lodges. I guess catching our bound in Walleye every single time we go out to fish may be the reason. Big Pike, a 46 inch Muskie and the biggest Bass I have ever caught in my life all came from the waters around nice Cove. (pleasantcove.com)
When you venture out to fish early ice, your 1st priority should be safety. Ice reports for your local area may be found on weather networks, talking to local tackle shops, social and local media hubs and on fishing forums. Ice conditions can differ from day to day caused by current or warming weather trends, so be aware of the conditions in the neighborhood and kind of water system you’re going to be fishing. Don t take someone s word for it, generally be prepared with a spud to check for ice safety with with correct ice safety gear like a floater suit, ice picks and a charged cell phone in case you have to make an emergency call to local authorities. What you want to do, is change your sonar so you may be able to watch your tempt on the screen at all times. Now, drop your Freedom Minnow, difficult Ricky or alike beaded jig into the hole and let it flutter down. When it’s a foot or so off the bottom, flip your bail and let the tempt pause for at least five to ten seconds. If you do not see a perch rush it, pop up the tempt briskly using your wrist, much like you could do it you were jigging for lake trout -, then let the tempt flutter back to the bottom under controlled slack. Pause for some second, then pop the tempt up again. (scout.com)
Another angle to new water adventures will include pursuing an atypical species. What do I mean by that? When most ice anglers come to fish Lake Superior, few think about the walleye fishery. Most automatically want to fish the more popular species like smallmouth bass, trout, salmon or whitefish. Still Lake Superior s Chequamegon Bay is a multi-species panacea, also featuring an excellent perch and walleye fishery-I know this firsthand, because I work for the Bad River Tribe s Fish & Game program, and we have an excellent fish hatchery quality yearly stocks of both species into this system. It’s April 20th and we at Mattice Lake Outfitters are really wondering where our Spring is going? Was Spring 2008 this way also? If many of you recall we were iced out of many outpost camp places on opening weekend. In fact we had some number of guests inquiring if or not this could really be true as at home in the US Spring was in full force with flowers in bloom and green landscapes abound. As to not complain too much we did have some days of sunshine which has taken care of some of the snow in the bush and the ice on the lakes however on the other hand we have heard of many local fisherman in the neighborhood still out ice fishing so that surely doesn’t sound Spring like to us. By the way, I favour baitcasting equipment – exactly, a 7′ to 7′ 2 medium heavy action rod and reel spooled with 17- to 30-pound test braided line – but you may be able to surely use your spinning equipment provided it’s tough enough to wrestle a big toothy critter. Just make sure to add a quality steel or heavy fluorocarbon leader until the end of your line before snapping on the same fast strike rig you used at last ice. , attach your dead bait the same way, by inserting one tine from the 1st treble hook under the skin near the baitfish’s rear and the second hook under the skin near the dorsal fin so that it hangs vertically straight up and down.
