Both species of sunfish are great on the table, far better-tasting to most palate than bass, and biologists say that harvesting a bound of them can really be good for the average size of the populations; otherwise, they tend to overpopulate and never reach full maturity, especially in private ponds. An electric knife makes fast work of the filleting job. Most anglers leave the skin in place, dust with cornmeal and deep-fry–hard on the cholesterol, great on the tongue. (al.com)
Lake Guntersville is 67, 900 acres in size with an average depth of 15 feet and a maximum depth of 45 feet. From Guntersville Dam to Nickajack Dam, the lake measures 76 miles. A Tennessee Valley Authority TVA impoundment of the Tennessee River, the Sequatchie River is the major tributary, followed by Town Creek and many smaller creeks. The deeper portions of the lake usually comprise of sand, gravel and mud. The steep ledges of old stream channels comprise of limestone. Most of the shoreline has a sand and gravel bottom. Heavy siltation has occurred in some creeks like Mud, North Sauty and South Sauty. (waterfrontbay.com)
I like to launch at Chisenhaw creek. You have the old creek bed where you may be able to catch big bass and lots of crappy throughout the spring. There are 2 or 3 small islands with holes in the side of them that bait fish like to go in. If the weeds have not totally covered them up, I have caught some number of 5+ pounders out of there. Use a rapala, swim bait, or anything that mimics a live shad. Make sure to have a rod heavy enough to turn their head, if the hit that mill foil, they are gone. My grandmother lives less than a mile from Chisenhaw that is why I am so fractional to that area. (247sports.com)
Some Guntersville s crappie anglers fish its riprap with spider rigs. But Carter enjoys casting and retrieving a jig. I like a 6-foot medium-light-action Berkley spinning rod and Quantum SS 10 reel, spooled with 4-pound-test clear blue Stren Original. That line is greatly observable and you may be able to detect the lightest bites, he says. When the wind is calm and crappies roam shallow, I use a 1/32-oz head with a red # 2 hook. But if the wind rises or crappies go deeper, I switch to a 1/16-oz jig, an 1/8-ouncer at times. He dresses his jig with either a 2-inch Bass Pro Shops tube or curlytail grub, usually blue with a clear rear or blue with a bubblegum rear. (in-fisherman.com)
As the years went by my fishing bass club tournaments did not fulfill the competitive want I had. Looking for more, I moved on to more competitive tournament trails like US Angler’s Choice, BFL, PBF, B. A. I. T. And other big open tournaments. With my success I then chose to become a full time guide on North Alabama’s premier lakes. This could let me to share the knowledge I have assumed from thousands and thousands of hours on the water. I have built Tim Chandler’ Pro Guide Service into one of the top guide services on Lake Guntersville because I have a commitment to the angler. You, the angler, are my priority and I want you to take pleasure in your trip as YOU catch the fish. (mildrillafishing.com)
Crappie anglers usually use minnows or small jigs. Minnows used for crappie fishing are 1- or 2-inch fathead minnows, aka tuffies. Minnows are usually fished with a size 4 gold large-gap crappie hook and a small split-shot weight between the hook and a float. A lively minnow should be hooked just behind the lips from the bottom through the top lip or in the back, keeping away from the spine. Place the weight a hand length from the hook, and set the float so the minnow will be above the crappie. Fishing line should be heavy enough to pull a crappie hook out of a snag without breaking the line, however fishing line should be light enough that the split shot keeps the fishing line tight. One that I enjoy fishing is Lake Girardeau, which is west of Jackson. Drive over to Gravel Hill, which is west of Burfordsville, then head south. It’s a decent-sized lake that runs from shallow coves to pretty deep water that’s close to 30 feet deep. This lake has crappie in it, however I have never done real well on crappie. It does have quite some red ear, bass, catfish and bluegill. The lake tends to be clear. You may be able to fish some spots around Lake Girardeau from shore, however a ship sure helps. You may be able to use your outboard but it’s a no-wake lake. (Browse around here)
The Roberson-Archer Act of 1994 mandates that every operator of a motorized vessel, age 12 or older, must be licensed. The boating Safety Enhancement Act of 2001 mandates that anybody who turned 12 years old after January 1, 2002, may, after getting a vessel license, operate a vessel only if an adult 21 years old or older with a boating license, is onboard and in a position to take direct control of the vessel. A licensed operator, 14 years old or older, may operate alone. Ownership of a certification validating successful completion of a state-accepted boating course isn’t the same thing as an operator’s license. (westalabamahuntingtrail.com)
