When Blue Eye Trevalla went to quota in 1998, Mures were forced to secure their supply by purchasing 65 tonnes of quota. Mure’s two boats Kiella and the recently launched 72 foot Diana now catch this quota to preserve a continual supply of new, hook-caught product to the Tasmanian market. Mures are the biggest quota holder of Blue Eye Trevalla in this high quality line fishery. Ling is a comparatively new species to be targeted by their boats and is showing to be well-liked. Throughout the north to high seas fishing grounds, roughly 300 nautical miles off the New South Wales coast. These colder months are tough fishing with longer trips at sea and rough conditions. But the reward is a range of premium seafood that differs somewhat from our summer species which will include our signature Blue Eye Trevalla, also as Yellowtail Kingfish and King Morwong. It’s certainly one of the jewels of the sea from a chef s point of view. Its firm, bright white flesh when cooked perfectly is hard to pass up despite of how it’s prepared. One of the methods we use for working out where Blue-eye use up their lives is to look at the chemical structure inside the ear bones. The chemical makeup and the ratios of different isotopes in the ear bones will tell us lots about where the Blue-eye come from. We use this info, with models of ocean currents, to tell us how Blue-eye move from their spawning sites onto the fishing grounds, and what that means by stock size. (csiro.au)

We have a man on the hauler gaffing the fish as they come up, releasing the sharks and taking the buoys and weights off the line. Another man will procedure the fish as we go, and the other two will be behind the hauler replacing hooks and fixing the equipment as the line comes back in. They ll be extra hands on the processing too if we get a good run of fish, and they ll help winching the baskets of catch into the cold room. They rotate jobs each magazine, and we idle up the lines till we re done. It takes about 75 90 minutes to haul a magazine. For the remainder of the nineteenth century the local market sustained the fishing business. The Tasmanian kingfish was the mainstay of early fishing; in the 1880s a crew of three fishermen may well take up to 500 fish of 12 14 lb each with handlines in a night. But it disappeared around the turn of the century and by 1915 catches were not known. The fish didn’t return to importance commercially till the 1960s when catches were made in deep water. A fish of alike look, the barracouta, then supplied most of the demand for new fish till about 1975 when it too abruptly vanished.
