Of the following year. It’s our opinion that there are two types of Walleye in the Bay of Quinte: the "Migratory Walleye" and the "inhabitant Walleye. " The Migratory Walleye are what all anglers dream of. The 4 to 15lbs on occasion bigger Walleye that comes into the bay in mid to late October and stays here through the winter months, spawn in the spring then head back out to Lake Ontario by late June to early July. Anglers fish hard throughout these times both in boats and through the ice on occasion facing severe conditions to catch one of these trophy fish. The inhabitant Walleye are here all year around. McAllister continues: At roughly 1:47 I marked a small bar on my flasher 16 feet down. I reeled up quickly and began trying to coax the fish into biting. Shortly after reeling up, this fish became interested and the mark kept to get bigger and bigger. From the size of the mark on my LX9 and from years of experience on the Bay, I knew she was a trophy. Inside seconds, the fish crushed my PK, I set the hook, my WhiteOut rod buckled and there was nothing but dead weight! I knew this could possibly be The One I d been chasing for so long. I screamed out to my friend Cezar that I needed help and he was there in a flash. (outdoorlife.com)
Light biting Perch still managed to get themselves hauled out, and by the end of the day we had a nice variety of good eating sized Walleye and some of the bigger Perch caught that day. No big bruisers like the 10lb 2oz Walleye I caught trolling these same waters just two months previous, however we all no they’re there and, without doubt, we will all be back to attempt our hand again. Oh yes, with respect to the Gorilla, I went neck-and-neck with the flasher ‘addicts’, and better, suffered no obvious eye strain related exhaustion. Now I am not saying I was not caught up in the ‘cat-and-mouse’ games unfolding under our feet as the blow by blow details were articulated to me by Scott, however I think I proved again that a properly jigged presentation can hold own. The complete operation is 100 mobile, driven by a fleet of movable shelters, dependable on-ice transportation and an encyclopedic awareness of walleye movements. I have fished the Bay of Quinte for many years, and walleye there never stop cycling between regions. Pulsing is how Guide Ryan Shorey describes these moves. Generally staying one step ahead of them is important, and the team has seasonal, daily and hourly modifications down to a science. Quinte is anything but a sit and soak ice fishery. Knowing when and where to move is something these guys have dialed right in. Their capability to anticipate, change and react is unbelievable. (Check out this site)
In very big bodies of water like Lake Ontario, Lake of the Woods and Lake Winnipeg, a sizeable part of the walleye population spawns in the spring in one or more big river systems that flow into the lake. Where this occurs, walleye get a head start on the spring migration by moving toward the rivermouths in the fall, where they rest, stage, concentrate and feed over the winter. It’s the reason the ice fishing is so good in the Bay of Quinte, as an example, and around the mouths of the Rainy, Red and Winnipeg Rivers. (outdoorcanada.ca)
The bite frequently starts in early December at the mouth of the Rainy River where it goes into Four Mile Bay and out of two narrows Lighthouse Gap and Morris Gap into Lake of the Woods. Walleyes bite best throughout the low-light periods of morning and evening, however fish happen along all day, particularly at early-ice. Most walleyes run one to three pounds, with a sprinkling of bigger fish and some fish over 8 pounds. As the season progresses, many walleyes drop deeper, farther out in the lake. Most local resorts share info on where the bite s going. We frequently use up a morning in recognized hot-bite regions, then the rest of the day searching new regions. (in-fisherman.com)
