Barbel Fishing On The River Derwent

There’s also an abundance of other species to be found, we have recorded bags of Chub in extra of 50lbs,  individual bream to over 9lbs and river Carp to 27lbs.  There are many Dace, Bleak and Roach, also as a healthy head of Pike. There are many lakes and pools in the neighborhood where you may be able to fish for Carp and Tench also as for match fishing. All of which offer different fishing alternatives through out the year. 1st cast ends in a bad result as the feeder tangles in the rocks that line the river and is wedged firm and lost, after retying my rig the second cast hardly hits the river when the rod is nearly ripped from my hands by a savage bite, the fish makes off downstream and I feel sure I have hooked a barbel only for the fish to come to the surface and end up tight to the bank 15 or so metres below me, this is certainly not a barbel and a Dutch friend sitting behind me watching the action unfolds suspects I have hooked a roofblei more usually called an asp, frequently called the toothless predator the asp is more common to eastern Europe but is gradually spreading through the Dutch river system. I started to hone a technique that looked quite lots like I was French Nymphing for trout or grayling. It most likely does not appear in any of the handbooks but it just about did the trick. I felt confident that I could find regions that should hold fish, if I could just hold the technique together for long enough I may be in with a chance. After three hours of running luncheon meat around weed beds, through deep channels and under trees my concentration started to wane and my faith started to fail me. One long run under some branches wielded no take at all, however as I wound in I realised that the luncheon meat had not really moved much more than some yards from where I had cast it first. Anyway I started on a cold morning in one swim nothing not a knock, I stayed in this swim for couple of hours, then walked up the river a little. I came back down and fished a swim just above my last swim. Its a pretty narrow part of the river and there’s lots of overhanging branches. I cast and let the bate settle tap tap and the tip pulled round straight into a good fish. I landed a nice Perch which went 2lb 4oz, I then lost a fish, then caught a bigger fish of 3lb. Conditions. For general Barbel fishing I could propose a 1. 5-1. 75 lb test curve feeder rod but in flood conditions I use a 2. 25 lb test curve to give me that much needed extra power. The feeders I use are typically 3-4 oz in normal river conditions and 5-7 oz in high floods. To make my rigs Iv’e become accustomed to using coated braid. 10 lb does the trick. My hook size differs from size 14 when using small pellets, up to size 10 when using bigger baits like meat. Now the length of my hook length also differs although typically it is around 2-3 ft.  . This river and its dams are home to 6 distinctively different species of barbel 5 grow to alike size as UK fish at around 20lbs but the big one is the monster Comizo which can grow to 45lbs. The Guadiana river – separately from some regions close to towns like Serpa and Mertola, is virtually unfished, in fact for many miles, unless you have a ship, it’s unfishable. One part of this river is 300 yards large with islands, shallow runs, deep 40ft holes and rocks, some the size of a double decker bus.
