Arkabutla Spillway Fishing Report

The lake and is falling fast again.   if or not it comes back up this week depends on how much rain we get Tues – Wed.   Best reports recently have been for Blue Catfish white humpbacks fishing the windy side of the lake near the dam with cut shad.   Some people have been trolling creek mouths in the major lake with jigs and/or minnows for crappie, but with few reports.   No reports on anything else.   With colder weather predicted this week, do not espect many positive changes.   For Largemouth Bass, look for clearer water and attempt soft plastics or a jig-n-pig around any cover. Bank fishing anglers do well pitching a double-rig jig under a cork from the bank into the current, Driscoll said. Because the water swirls and eddies, it gives action to the jigs as they bounce along under the cork. There is lots of debris – rocks and rebar from the construction of the spillway also as wood that has washed in – and miles of fishing line strung between them. Rains have the water murky. Crappie fishing was picking up recently with more people at the ramps. Over 6000 acres of grass was flooded this year, some over 10 ft high. Now, best luck on crappie was trolling crankbaits 7 – 8 ft deep in about 14 – 15 ft of water. Some people are doing just slow trolling minnows. Catfishing was good fishing small, whole shad under jugs noodles along the grass edges; make sure to hit the river and creeks if we get any rainfall runoff. There have been some reports of largemouth bass fishing major lake points with topwaters early and late and soft plastics or crankbaits afterward on throughout the day. (fishidy.com)

For catfish, fish natural baits in creek and river channels as long as this week’s rainfall runoff continues. White bass have been schooling early and late in the day off sandy points in the major lake; fish shad-imitating jigs, spoons, or small crankbaits.
