The Argungu fishing festival is an yearly four-day event in Argungu, Kebbi State, Nigeria. The festival began in 1934, marking the end of centuries old hostilities between Kebbi Kingdom and the Sokoto Caliphate. The last day of the festival is the day of the fishing competition. Hundreds of men and women line the edge of the river. At the sound of the gun, they leap into the river where they have an hour to catch the biggest fish. They’re only allowed to use conventional techniques of fishing. The winner of the competition is given a monetary prize. . (alubarika.tumblr.com)
Argungu international fishing and cultural festival just like other monuments and socio economic edifices had suffered serious neglect throughout the military era. The festival became eliptic throughout the period with little resources and high corruption practices. Infrastructures put in there by years were decaying, buildings obsolescing without any support for maintainance. Things started to change in 1999 when Nigeria went back to democracy with his Excellency Alhaji Adama Alieru sworn in as the executive Governor of Kebbi State. Alieru came with high passion to restore the Argungu international fishing and cultural festival but lots of damage have been made to the buildings caused by a long time disregard.
